In 1587, English settlers established the Roanoke Colony in what we know today as North Carolina. Needing more resources and supplies from the Old World, they sent their governor back to England. When he returned for them three years later—after having been delayed by storms, finances, and wars—no trace of the ninety men, seventeen women, and eleven children remained. The governor was distraught, particularly because his daughter Eleanor and three-year-old granddaughter Virginia were among the missing. Were they killed by wild animals? Did they join local tribes? Or was the source of their disappearance something more mysterious, nefarious? Searches for the lost colonists have yielded only two significant clues: first, the word PHILIPPEAUX carved into a fence post near the main entrance of town, and, second, a collection of twenty-three large gray stones, each sporting the same crude etching of a faceless man with a crown of knives. While a vocal group of experts has labeled the stones as little more than a modern-day “hoax,” not everyone is so certain that they are fake. How could the Kingman have been transported to the New World? What did he want with it, with them? With us?
